School for Deacons


deacon_2011The 2011/12 School of Deacons began meeting this past August. The class is comprised of aspirants and postulants from the Dioceses of Ohio, Southern Ohio and Pittsburgh.

Students gather together at Southern Ohio’s Procter Center for formation and instruction four long weekends each year. In addition they have one retreat weekend. The Revs. Karl Ruttan, Steve Sedgwick, and Marie Phillips provide program oversight, formation and spiritual guidance for the students. The class uses WebEx every Tuesday evening for course lectures.

Deacon or diakonia comes from the Greek word meaning service. The diaconate is a distinctive order that challenges the Church with the needs of the world and calls all of the baptized to be the primary agents of service.
