The Sheadle Trust

March 3, 2011

Dear Members of the Episcopal Diocese of Ohio,

Jasper H. Sheadle, a devoted Episcopalian, was an executive in the iron and steel industry of Northeast Ohio. He died in 1916. His will provided for his wife, Kate, and, upon her death, established a trust “for the purpose of providing and paying suitable pensions and giving such suitable aid and assistance…. to aged, married couples and aged women residing in Cuyahoga County or Mahoning County, Ohio.” The Sheadle Trust, administered by Key Bank and a board of trustees, continues to provide meaningful stipends to women and men who “have had their income reduced or cut off, so that they are without sufficient means to obtain the necessities or comforts of life.”

The Sheadle Trust invites women and married couples to apply for benefits. Applicants should be age 65 or over, residents of Cuyahoga or Mahoning Counties, not receiving Medicaid, and born in the United States. No single men will be accepted. Members of the Episcopal Diocese of Ohio are particularly encouraged to apply.

Please fill out the Sheadle Fund Application and submit it to:
Key Private Bank
Attn: Jasper H. Sheadle Fund
127 Public Square

New Episcopal Church video offers first-hand tour of Holy Trinity Cathedral in Port Au Prince, Haiti

February 15, 2011

[Episcopal News Service] A significant video offering a first-hand tour of the devastated Holy Trinity Cathedral in Port Au Prince, Haiti, is available on the Episcopal Church website here: http://www.episcopalchurch.org/haitiappeal/

Presenting the video tour is the Rev. Joseph Constant, Episcopal Church Special Coordinator for Haiti, who gives a step-by-step look at the destruction and the sad remains of the Cathedral. On the recently taped video, Haitian-born Constant adds personal insights into the situation and addresses why the rebuilding of the Holy Trinity Cathedral complex is so critical for the people of Haiti.

"Nothing tells a story like moving images,” noted Mike Collins, director of digital media.  “To see what remains of the Cathedral is heartbreaking. The only way people are going to understand how dire the situation is in Haiti actually you need to see it."

The three–minute video, with panoramic views of the remaining rubble, is part of the appeal to help rebuild the once beautiful and now destroyed Holy Trinity Cathedral in downtown Port-Au-Prince. The Rebuild Our Church in Haiti campaign is a grassroots, churchwide appeal to begin to rebuild Holy Trinity Cathedral, which is the spiritual and cultural heart of the Episcopal Diocese of Haiti.  Congregations interested in participating in the appeal will find more information at www.episcopalchurch.org/haitiappeal

Jubilee Ministry

August 11, 2010

"Jubilee" Ministry is an organizing principle for understanding and interpreting Christian ministry. It is a ministry of The Episcopal Church, with affiliated Jubilee Ministry officers in all dioceses. Churches and other places engaged in Jubilee Ministry can be recognized, through a process leading to certification and engagement in a Jubilee Ministry Network. For more information, visit the Jubilee Ministry pages of The Episcopal Church's website http://www.episcopalchurch.org/jubilee.

The mission of Jubilee Ministry is: To make a direct and dynamic link between our theology and our ethics - said another way - the talk of our faith and the walk of our faith. As Christians we do this by

- calling the church to live out its prophetic of empowering local people to "do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with your God" (Micah 6:8)

- responding to the Gospel's call to "feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, welcome the stranger, clothe the naked, care for the sick, and visit the imprisoned" (Matthew 25:35-36)

Help Make Dresses for Little Girls in Haiti

March 29, 2010

“Project Pillowcases”

For this project the pillowcases do not have to be new—gently used pillowcases work very well and sheets or fabric may be used. Please note the cotton content of the fabric and the pillowcases and keep the cotton content 75% or greater. 100% cotton will be the most comfortable. Pillowcases and other fabric can be found at thrift stores, garage sales, flea markets, and many other places for reasonable prices. You may add trim or leave them plain. Use your creativity and have fun!

Your Parish Can Help the Unemployed

January 14, 2009

The grim news that 524,000 jobs were lost in December and that the unemployment rate hit 7.2 percent starkly underscores the need for all sectors of our society to support unemployed workers and to encourage employers to treat all workers justly in times of economic crisis.

Interfaith Worker Justice (IWJ) has recently prepared a Congregational Toolkit to help unemployed workers. Available free of charge from the IWJ Web site, the toolkit outlines what resources are available to unemployed workers, suggests how to establish support groups for unemployed workers, and offers worship aids for lifting up unemployed workers and employers in this time of crisis. It can be downloaded here: icon Economic Crisis Toolkit

"Congregations have always stood by unemployed workers in times of struggle," said Bishop Gabino Zavala, Co-President of IWJ's Board of Directors. "These congregational tools help us fulfill our mission of serving God's people."
