Bridges Out of Poverty Training
On Saturday, March 10, 2012, from 8:30 am to 3:00 pm, a Bridges out of Poverty workshop will be held at St. Michael’s in the Hills, 4718 Brittany Rd., in Ottawa Hills. Volunteer experiences often bring us into contact with people who have spent their entire lives at risk, and underserved. With our middle-class assumptions and values, we can find ourselves wondering about the decisions we see them making. This workshop will help us better understand the tyranny of living in a culture that is in constant survival mode, and the hidden rules that govern how each of us behaves in our social class. This workshop will provide practical, real-world support and guidance for overcoming barriers and helping others succeed. Bridges Out of Poverty is one of several training programs written by Ruby Payne, Ph.D., to help teachers working in low-income schools. Linda Cunning, executive director of Abri Social Services, Inc., will be one of two presenters of Bridges Out of Poverty. The cost is $10, and participants are asked to register by calling 419-531-1616 by March 5.
For more information, call St. Michael’s in the Hills, 419 – 531-1616.
Pursuing God with U2 at New Life
New Life Church in Uniontown will be using the videos, music, and lyrics of the band U2 to explore spirituality and our relationship with God during Lent. If you know about God, but not about U2, or if you know about U2, and not about God, come and learn how faith influences one of the most popular rock bands of all time, and what we can learn from them about our own faith. The series will be held every Wednesday evening from February 29 through April 4 from 6:15 p.m.to 8:15 p.m., beginning with a light supper. Each exploration of music and spirituality is self-contained, so join us for one, two, or all!!

St. Thomas, Berea, Hosts Couponer for Christ
St. Thomas, Berea, hosted Joni Meyer-Crothers, an "extreme" couponer. Although Meyer-Crothers became a couponer after her husband lost his job, she has turned it into a ministry for feeding the hungry. Many items are free, she said, and her website provides help with finding out what's free each week. She challenged her audience to donate five items a week, which she says would insure that no one goes hungry. Food stamps are not enough, she explained. They don't cover items such as toothpaste, toothbrushes, or shampoo, but those items can frequently be found for free. Check out her website–Saving and Sharing for Christ– here.
