Book of Remembrance
Eliza Jennings Backus, who was the president of the Women's Auxiliary of the Diocese of Ohio from 1919 to 1929, realized that the Board's Expense Fund was insufficient for its work. Nominees for office were limited to those who were able to afford the necessary expenses. She inaugurated the idea of the Eliza Jennings Backus Endowment by means of a Book of Remembrance.
Mrs. Backus presented the first volume of The Book of Remembrance, a beautifully hand-tooled purple leather book. The Schmid Family of Canton generously presented the second volume in 1949. It is also hand-tooled and is bound in red leather. A third volume was started in 1973, and a fourth volume is now in use. All of the books will be on display at Annual Meetings.
If you wish to memorialize or to honor someone who has been in any way connected with women's work in the Church, either by giving or in service, you may have her name inscribed in The Book of Remembrance.
For each name inscribed, a minimum donation of $5.00 to the Eliza Backus Endowment Fund is required. Interest paid on the investment is sent to the Diocesan Board for travel expenses.
