Provincial Synod Nominees

Provincial Synod is the Legislative Body that has oversight for provincial ministries. It meets once every 3 years. Province V is comprised of the 15 dioceses in Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, and Eastern Missouri. Information about the ministries of Province V can be found at www.provincev.com.

Bennett_Robert Robert Bennett (Harcourt Parish, Gambier)
I believe that the Episcopal Church, with the Holy Spirit, can change the world, and that I am called to serve as Provincial Deputy. I have served the diocese on Standing Committee, as Provincial Deputy, diocesan coordinator for EFM, and registrar for the Kenyon conference. Nationally, I was Midwestern V.P. for Integrity. I staffed their booth through the 2006 General Convention and have attended two others. Locally, I am Mission Area Council representative, EFM mentor, unofficial greeter, often delegate to Diocesan convention, and have been senior and junior warden and treasurer. Episcopalian since birth, in Ohio since 1967, I completed seminary in 1986. Following my clergy partner, I sang in choirs of seven Ohio parishes. An ancient historian, retired Kenyon Classics professor and Associate Provost, I was a caregiver. Working with Canterbury, I envision the church as college students do. I will serve with humor, prayer, energy, and mutual respect.

The Rev. Alan C. James (Canon to the Ordinary)
For the last three years I have served as the President of Province V. I have an understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of our current provincial structure. As Canon to the Ordinary, I am aware of the need for a stronger more effective provincial structure to assist dioceses. Building strong provincial ministry networks is a way for us to share experiences and resources across diocesan lines. In addition, my participation in overhauling the deanery/mission area structure has provided me with experience and insight into developing these underutilized layers of our Church structure in a way that promotes mission and ministry.

With decreased budgets at both the diocesan and denominational level, it is all the more important that we develop the provincial structure (and their ministry networks) to be more effective in supporting the mission and ministries of the 15 dioceses in our province. As President, I have improved communication between the Provincial structure and diocesan leaders, started new ministry networks, and drafted an amendment to the by-laws (to be voted upon at Synod) which will give diocesan leaders more authority and responsibility in charting the Province’s course. I would like to serve as a delegate to Synod in order to be able to continue the developmental work we have accomplished over the last three years.

The Rev. Margaret Holt Sammons (St. Michael’s in the Hills, Toledo)
One of the most positive developments in recent years has been the call we’ve heard from Christ to collaborate across parish boundaries. The Provincial Synod provides an opportunity to listen to the ways Christ might be calling us to work together across diocesan boundaries. Living in the “border town” of Toledo (which almost became part of Michigan!) I’m particularly interested in this. Serving on Commission on Ministry, Episcopal Community Services, and the Standing Committee, has given me a sense of our diocese’s strengths and challenges. I’d be honored to represent us at the Provincial Synod.

I would be honored to once again represent the Diocese of Ohio to Province V. This is a faithful, vibrant diocese. It offers substantial gifts beyond its borders into the wider Church, and the world. From the most intimate of our congregations to our largest; through the scores of gifted people - laity accompanied by our bishops, priests, and deacons - who minister throughout the diocese; with Diocesan Convention Delegates to General Convention Deputies to members of church-wide bodies; this diocese has strong leaders , strong followers of Jesus Christ. In over two decades of ministry here I have come to know people from Put-in-Bay to Youngstown, Akron to Ashtabula, Trinity Toledo to Trinity Cathedral. We share concerns and aspirations about growth and evangelism, mission and service, understanding the faith, resources for The Church. I bring my broad experience, my prayers, and affection for the people of the diocese.
