Team Effort at Cedar Hills from St. Thomas, Berea
Volunteering at Cedar Hills is a team effort for St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Berea. The Rev. Gayle Catinella has volunteered a week each summer for four years as camp chaplain. When asked what keeps her coming back she said: “I come here because I find God in new and different ways with people who want to find God with me!”
Dody Sandt, from St. Thomas, is a volunteer who has come the past three years to spend time with the campers and keep up with what is happening in their world. Mary Lee Stowell, from St. Thomas, has volunteered as camp nurse for a week each summer of the last 8 or 9 years. She relates how she has watched campers grow up through the years: “Many of the staff came up as campers and ended up becoming counselors. They learn a lot about life and about how to get along with others.
Some campers have no idea what it feels like to be loved and accepted for who they are; they find it here. Many lifelong friendships have been formed. More people should take advantage of the many things Cedar Hills has to offer groups, meetings, and retreats. It is a jewel in the crown of the diocese.”
For the last three years Mary Lee has brought Marcie Hist, also of St. Thomas, to volunteer with her. The St. Thomas involvement doesn’t stop there. Three current staff members and a number of campers are also from St. Thomas.
