Camp Cedar Hills 2012
A brochure, camper registration and staff application packets for Camp Cedar Hills 2012 are now available for download. This year the program will focus on sustainability of self, community, and of our environment. Through age appropriate activities couched in play, campers and staff alike will discover how each can benefit from attending to self, community, and our environment making this world a better place. As in the past, we will look at each of these areas of exploration in the context of how we respond to our loving God. Team Effort at Cedar Hills from St. Thomas, Berea
Volunteering at Cedar Hills is a team effort for St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Berea. The Rev. Gayle Catinella has volunteered a week each summer for four years as camp chaplain. When asked what keeps her coming back she said: “I come here because I find God in new and different ways with people who want to find God with me!”
Dody Sandt, from St. Thomas, is a volunteer who has come the past three years to spend time with the campers and keep up with what is happening in their world. Mary Lee Stowell, from St. Thomas, has volunteered as camp nurse for a week each summer of the last 8 or 9 years. She relates how she has watched campers grow up through the years: “Many of the staff came up as campers and ended up becoming counselors. They learn a lot about life and about how to get along with others.
Some campers have no idea what it feels like to be loved and accepted for who they are; they find it here. Many lifelong friendships have been formed. More people should take advantage of the many things Cedar Hills has to offer groups, meetings, and retreats. It is a jewel in the crown of the diocese.”
For the last three years Mary Lee has brought Marcie Hist, also of St. Thomas, to volunteer with her. The St. Thomas involvement doesn’t stop there. Three current staff members and a number of campers are also from St. Thomas.
Cedar Hills Receives Gift for Transforming Lives
Cedar Hills Camp is a place where memories are made and lives are impacted. On June 20, 2008, two dedicated camp volunteers from St. Thomas Episcopal Church of Berea celebrated the years of transformation offered through the ministry of Cedar Hills Camp with the gift of a handmade quilt. Mary Lee Stowell and Marcie Hist presented Director Pete Nielsen and his wife Laura with the quilt in recognition of the positive impact that Cedar Hills has had on so many lives. Marcie is the quilter and Mary Lee helped purchase materials, design the quilt, and tie the knots.
The quilt is made of summer camp T-shirts beginning with the 1994 camping season, Pete’s first season as director, and is a tribute to the 14 summer camp seasons in which over 3500 children have attended.
To give context to this important ministry, in this period, 280,000 contact hours had been provided to children, through positive role models committed to Christian character building, as well as to the development of a healthy self-image and community consciousness. It also celebrates the gracious generosity of our diocesan family who supports this ministry and make miracles such as camp available to our youth. Thank you.
